Kumagera wanted to expand into more premium products using their CNC tools and the local wood they work with every day. Since Niseko attracts a lot of high-end tourism, we decided on a sushi platter that elevates the dining experience by highlighting something often overlooked: the soy sauce.

Inspired by Mt. Yotei, the region’s iconic peak right outside their workshop, the platter turns the mountain into a functional centerpiece — guiding the sauce down carved ridges into a reservoir where the sushi waits.

Getting the data right

The project started by working with the publicly available topography of Mt. Yotei. Importing this into Rhino produced a very dense and unclean mesh, so by slicing the layers and rebuilding it, a surface was created that could be carefully manipulated to adjust ridges and ravines that will later serve as the soy-sauce guides.

The board was then CNC’ed and finished by hand adding chamfers and pleasing proportions to allow the sushi itself to sit comfortably by Lake Shouyu.

Check out the video showing how the soy sauce flows:

Premium packaging

To further increase the premium perception of the product, and to flex my KeyShot and Illustrator skills, I modeled up a quick mock-up of a potential packaging for the sushi platter. The concept is to “take the sushi experience to a higher level” bringing back the topography elevation lines of Mt. Yotei and vectorizing an icon that embodies the product core feature of soy sauce flowing along the mountain gorges.
