After struggling to find Japan-related shirts that I would like to wear, I started MKBZ - a project to create the type of pieces that I would enjoy showing off on a daily basis.
三日坊主 / ‘mikkabouzu’ is a phrase in Japanese, describing the behavior of picking up a new hobby/interest/passion, seemingly committing fully to them, only to drop them after “three days”. It’s a reminder for myself to not let this project be a three-day-monk-project, but also to share with people that this is a human behavior we all face in our lives - and that’s ok.
着たいと思える “日本っぽい” Tシャツがなかなか見つからなくて、だったら自分で作ろうと思って始めたのが MKBZ。毎日ふつうに着たくなる、ちょっと自慢できるような一枚を目指してるプロジェクトです。
「三日坊主」は新しいことを始めて一気にハマるけど、気づいたらすぐやめちゃう――あの感じのこと。これは自分への合図でもあって、このプロジェクトを三日坊主で終わらせないための言葉。とはいえ、それって誰にでもある人間らしいクセだし、そんな自分も含めてOKだよっていうメッセージでもあります。
The Beginning (season 1)
The first season I played around a lot with graphic designs inspired by my favorite Japanese magazines, advertisements and brands - with the theme that would later become more prevalent: “tiredness”.
The whole production went down where I lived: Frankfurt am Main. A small local shop handled the embroidery, and the rest - from sewing on the tags to screenprinting the graphics - was done by me in a 15m² apartment room.
Cohesive continuations (season 2)
For the second season my goal was to create a more cohesive overall expression. A summery, nostalgic vibe with white and blue as the core colors. The prints a mix of parody (pocari sweat blue, the summer survival essential) and illustration.
Working on this season also helped me understand that I enjoy adding a touch of cuteness to my designs. Capturing the feeling of ‘tiredness’ in different ways is surprisingly fun and seems to bring up new ideas everytime I concern myself with it.
But wait, there’s more? (season 3)
Still currently under development I just started working on the third iteration of the brand. During my one year in Japan I met tons of interesting people, saw new places and found new inspirations. Season 3 is all about finally moving toward my real goal with all my work: Forming a connection between Germany and Japan.
This time around the shirts are printed by GoodSmith in Tokyo, with the illustration provided by my talented friend Maria Kato whom I met during my stay in Hokkaido.
